About Mars Hill Church
About Mars Hill Church
Mars Hill is a church serving the Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty areas in Eastern Iowa. Mars Hill was designed specifically for college students, young working singles, couples and families who are serious about knowing and following the teachings of Christ. The people of Mars Hill seek to develop their spiritual life together in non-traditional ways. With that mission in mind, we strive to communicate the hope found in Jesus Christ in a style that is relevant and appealing to today's culture. Many different kinds of people from all kinds of religious and nonreligious backgrounds make up Mars Hill. Mars Hill is an interdenominational, biblically-based, Christian church, but we are not obligated to any specific creed, liturgy, or tradition. Instead, we remain free to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our community and congregation. Mars Hill is about revolutionizing the community around us by loving without reserve and serving like there is no tomorrow.
Why the name "Mars Hill"?
"Mars Hill" is the historical name of the center of philosophy and debate in ancient Athens. Mars Hill is the place that the Apostle Paul introduces the teachings of Christianity to the great thinkers of Athens:
"Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious, for as I was walking along I saw your many altars. And one of them had this inscription on it - 'To an Unknown God.' You have been worshiping him without knowing who he is, and now I wish to tell you about him." - Acts 17:22-23
Mars Hill Church hopes to be bringing the same timeless and life affirming teachings to those in Iowa City who are looking for answers to life's deepest questions.
How can I get involved?
Mars Hill Church meets in a variety of formats including house churches, small groups, times of prayer and worship, and times of service. To find out when and where we meet, visit our events page or check out our calendar. You can also contact us for more information.
History of Mars Hill Church
Mars Hill Church in Iowa City was started as a church plant in June of 2003 when a group of 25 individuals moved together from Ames, IA to Iowa City and the surrounding areas. The church plant was a mission of Stonebrook Community Church, which like Mars Hill Church, is a member of the Great Commission Churches. Since 2003, Mars Hill has grown to become an active member of the Iowa City and Coralville community by serving numerous non-profit organizations in service projects, coordinating with other local churches in an effort to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and interacting within the rich culture of the Iowa City area. In 2006, Mars Hill purchased a building near the corner of Muscatine and 1st Avenue in Iowa City. The building, called Creekside Sanctuary, is used for church services by Mars Hill and additional functions by other non-affiliated churches and ministries.
